While packing my room I came across some articles that I had written during my secondary school days, reading them made me realise that most of them was about, you guessed it, myself! What an irony. I had actually presented myself in a different form of expression, this triggered the idea of combining both my interest in art and writing into a self portrait. This combination was to document the different life journeys I have travelled in bite-sizes.

Being an avid reader of Streats, the way the publication was broken up into different segments drew my fancy. Being inspired, I wanted a publication with segments that document my own dreams and aspirations; attitudes and beliefs. Therefore, I created Joyce's Periodicals to reflect these personalities. I used the headlines of the various articles in the paper to convey messages to the audience. They have all taken different priorities at different juncture of my life, some have come to reality while others have faded off along the way.

Artist's Statement

A periodical documenting my dreams and aspirations; attitudes and beliefs. They have all taken different priorities at different juncture, some have come to reality while others have faded off along the way. One’s life can always be put into the context of a periodical, the sole difference being its content...

PAiNtinG

The Barricade of Dreams...

Barricades have always given me a sense of hope. When I see an area barricaded, I would anticipate something new to appear after they have been torn down. The barricades in my paintings have been put up near my place, I'll always try to catch a glimpse of what's happening inside whenever I walk pass, both out of curiosity as well as a sense of attachment. This is because they're building my utopia!! That utopia is to have direct access to an MRT station, something I've longed for since the launch of the MRT system in Singapore. It is even sweeter as the upcoming station is just behind my house, something I wasn't counting on. It only shows that dreams do come true and sometimes reality is even better.

POttERy

Love at first sight?!?!

Do you believe in "love at first sight"? I do! It's not with guys but CLAY! yes you heard me right, it's clay. I developed a deep interest the day my sis brought home a turntable. It was her who showed me the way to mould my first base for a pot and how to coil it. As time progressed, so did my confidence in pottery; so much so that I did pottery for 'A' Level Art. Being able to gain further insights on pottery in NIE has only deepen the interest even further. Experimenting with slab work, I created the colourful "kampong" house which was my first attempt ever. Though I must say that I still prefer coiling, probably because it's the method I have used all these while. The "wedding gown" is my biggest and most expressive creation I have done so far, and it's an abstract interpretation of the gown I wore on my wedding day.

Well, what if we swap places with them, and let them inhabit our "Concrete Jungle", while we roam the plains. Imagine Shenton Way at rush hour, with herds of elephants, rhinoceros, giraffes, monkeys and flocks of birds! Will there still be traffic jams? :)

 Peak Hour @ Shenton Way

Although forest conservation programmes have gained momentum in recent years due to declining natural resources, the message is still being taken lightly; with people still taking, chopping and killing with the same gusto. If this continues any much longer, trees in the future would probably end up looking very much like the image. So Go Green - Recycle - while there is still a chance!

 Concrete Tree in Autumn

With the acute scarcity of land in Singapore, the boundaries between built-up areas and natural areas have become very vague. This invisible barrier has been exaggerated in this image, with wild animals co-existing with us and our human made structures in earshot of each other.

 Concrete Jungle

pRinT

Love hate relationship

Among the many techniques that I’ve learnt in printmaking, Monotype was what I struggled with most during the printing process. Ironically, it was also my favourite technique! The first time I was introduced to monotype, I had problems grasping the concept. My thoughts were that it was weird and illogical to paint on a plate and then transfer onto a paper. Why can’t we just paint our images directly on the paper, wouldn't it be the same? However, upon starting on my own prints, I soon realised that some effects achieved with monotypes were not possible in other forms of art. The more I experimented, the more in love I fell for the technique. It has given me the freedom in creating what I envision with a healthy dose of fun, enjoyment and creative abandonment. Personally, I think monotype has an edge over other printmaking techniques as it allows the artists to be versatile and spontaneous. While some may feel that having only a single print is restrictive, I beg to differ, as I feel that what makes every print different yet beautiful. What's more, the element of surprise waiting for me at the end of the press was quite addictive. I thoroughly enjoyed every step of the process, from rolling the ink onto the plate to the anticipation before unveilling the print. Every single moment was unique just like the prints were.
